Transcript 0:00 A lot of men hit a point in midlife where the ground shifts. It's a layoff, it's a divorce, maybe it's kids who don't need you the same way. Could be a job search that goes nowhere. 0:11 But suddenly, the thing that told you who you were, the role, the purpose, it's gone. But the bills aren't, the responsibilities aren't, and you're still expected to show up and hold it all together. 0:24 I train men in exactly this spot. They come in saying they want to lose weight, get stronger, but what they're really dealing with is something heavier. They're stuck. They're tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix. 0:38 They feel invisible. They feel invisible to their employers, to society, and sometimes even their own family. Some of them are depressed, and they don't even know it. So this podcast is for those men, 0:52 and I call what they're experiencing the fade. And this show exists to fight the fade, to help men rebuild from the inside out, stronger bodies, sharper minds, and make real connections. 1:04 Not to go back to who they were, but to become someone better. My name is Jonathan. I'm forty-seven. 1:10 I'm a personal trainer and health coach, and I've spent years working with men in their thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a therapist. I'm not a researcher. 1:21 I'm just a guy who's trained men through this chapter in their life. And I've watched something happen to them that nobody's talking about, and I want to talk about it. And of course, I've also lived this. 1:34 I've had my own seasons of wondering what my purpose is, and it's that moment when you realize the doors are quietly closing. The world stops being your oyster. You can't just do anything you want anymore. 1:45 Time is shorter. The body doesn't cooperate the way it used to. But the commitments are locked in, and you start asking yourself questions that you didn't have to ask at thirty. 1:56 So this isn't me lecturing from a mountaintop. I'm in it with you. And I'm starting this podcast because I think naming the problem is the first step. 2:05 So here's what's actually happening to men right now, and I mean happening at scale across the country in ways that should be front-page news but aren't. Physically, we're declining faster than we should. 2:17 About forty percent of men aged forty to fifty-nine are obese. And after thirty, you're losing muscle mass every year, whether you notice it or not. 2:26 Testosterone drops slowly but steadily, and men are dying almost six years younger than women on average. The body's fading, and many guys just chalk it up to getting old without understanding what is actually going on, 2:40 or that it's largely preventable. Socially, we're kind of disappearing. The average man's friendship has been collapsing for decades. 2:48 A lot of men in midlife can't name a single close friend outside of their spouse, if they have one. And this isn't just lonely, it's dangerous. 2:56 The research says social isolation carries the same mortality risk as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Your community faded, and you probably didn't even notice until it was gone. Emotionally, we're silent. 3:08 Men account for about eighty percent of suicides in this country. Eighty percent. And men aged forty-five to sixty-five are among the highest risk groups. But men are also far less likely to seek help. 3:20 They're less likely to talk to anyone or even admit something's wrong. We just push through and push through until we can't. And underneath all of it, there's an identity crisis. 3:30 The roles that used to define us, provider, protector, the guy who had it all figured out, they shift in midlife. Kids grow up, careers stall or end. 3:38 The culture doesn't know what it wants from men anymore, and most men don't know what they want anymore. Society stops seeing you, stops expecting anything from you. And if you're not careful, you start to disappear. 3:51 You even start to disappear to yourself. That's the fade. It's not one thing. It's all these things hitting at the same time, reinforcing each other, and almost nobody's talking about it right now. 4:02 So I keep using this term, the fade. Let me be clear on what I mean by that. The fade isn't just aging. Aging is natural. 4:13 The fade is what happens when physical decline, social isolation, emotional silence, and identity loss all hit at the same time. And each one makes the others worse. 4:25 Your body breaks down, so you stop showing up to places. You stop showing up, so you lose connections. You lose connections, so you go internal. 4:33 You go internal, so you lose the sight of who you are, and you stop seeing what's right in front of you. That could be the family. That could be the life you built. The things that should matter most. 4:44 You're there, but you're not really there. It's a cycle, and it pulls you under slowly. It's also what the world does to you. Society fades midlife men. The culture stops marketing to you. 4:55 Employers start looking past you. You become invisible in places that are important to you, at work, your community, sometimes even in your own home. And if nobody sees you, it gets harder to see yourself. 5:07 Most men don't hit one dramatic breaking point. There's no single moment where it all kind of falls apart. It's an erosion. It's a slow erosion. 5:17 You wake up one day, and you realize you're not who you were, and you don't know when it happened. That's the fade. And this podcast, Against the Fade, is about refusing to let it win. 5:27 Seeing it clearly, naming it, and fighting it on every front. So what is this podcast going to be? Each week, I'm going to take a different dimension of the fade and what it looks like to fight back. 5:39 The loneliness, the mental health silence, the identity crisis, the physical decline. One by one, we're going to name them and figure out what to do about them. Sometimes it'll just be me, 5:53 but soon I'll be bringing on other men. Not influencers, not gurus, just real guys in this demographic who are fighting the same fight. Men who have been knocked down and figured out how to get back up. 6:03 I want you to hear their stories. This isn't a lecture. I'm not here to talk at you. I want this to be a conversation and eventually a community, a place where men who refuse to fade can find each other. 6:15 That's what we're building here. If anything I said today resonated with you, or if you know a man who's fading and doesn't know it yet, share this episode with him. 6:23 Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for someone is let them know they're not invisible. And here's something you can do this week, just one thing. 6:32 Reach out to a man you haven't talked to in a while, a friend, a brother, an old coworker. Doesn't have to be deep. 6:39 Just check in, because if you're feeling the fade, there's a good chance he is too, and nobody's calling him up either. 6:47 So go ahead and subscribe, and if you want to go deeper, new episodes, practical insights on men's health, and updates on what we're building here, sign up for the newsletter at againstthefade.com. See you soon.
