Hey -
I was inspired by a book I read call the The Extinction of Experience along with previous books I’ve read about middle aged explorers.
It got me thinking about how easy it is, as I get older, to drift away from tangible experiences and the curious explorer inside of me. This episode is me working through what to do about it.
If you've been feeling a restlessness for something more, that you can't quite name, I think this one's for you.
quick side note, no episode this week, I’ll be back on the 28th with a new episode and some upcoming interviews.
This Week's Episode
EP8: "The Explorer Within" // Roosevelt, Fiennes, Blackadar, and the instinct most men bury somewhere between 30 and 45. What it costs you, and how to wake it up. [Listen now →]
Key Takeaways
We've traded experience for information about experience. A phone full of saved trails is not the same as a trail walked. The fade doesn't announce itself. It substitutes. One scroll at a time.
The explorer instinct has no expiration date. Roosevelt was 55 and humiliated. Fiennes summited Everest at 65. A country doctor named Walt Blackadar started kayaking in his 40s and ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The instinct doesn't leave. It gets buried.
Exploration is the response to hardship, not the escape from it. Every man in this episode chose the unknown right after a loss, a failure, or a restlessness they couldn't shake. That pattern is not a coincidence.
The second half of life is the river nobody has mapped. The first half came with a map somebody else drew. The second half doesn't. Most men see that blank space and call it decline. An explorer calls it territory.
Your Move This Week
Run the three-question test on something this week. Does it require you to show up in person? Is it genuinely unfamiliar? Is there a real chance you'll be uncomfortable or fail? If the answer is yes on all three, you've found an expedition. Doesn't matter how small. Go.
Go phone-free for one outing this week. Leave it in the glovebox or at home. A walk, a meal, a drive. No map, no music, no camera. You'll notice the reflex to reach for it. That reflex is the thing going extinct in you. Sit in the discomfort. That's the muscle.
Make the "Before Labor Day" list. One thing you have never done. One place you have never been. One experience you cannot research your way through in advance. Write all three down this week. Put dates on them before the end of the month. You don't need a plan. You need a deadline.
Bring one other man with you. Roosevelt had Kermit. Fiennes had Ginny and a volunteer crew he kept for 30 years. No explorer goes alone. Text the guy you haven't seen in six months and tell him you're planning something. Let him say yes or no. Either way, you've done the brave part.
One Line to Carry
"Most men look at the blank space ahead and see emptiness. An explorer looks at blank space on a map and sees territory."
