Hey -

In this episode I shared a story that derailed my life for a bit. I didn’t really want to tell the story, but my wife encouraged me to. My hope is that it will help another man if he is struggling with something. And of course the whole point of this show is refusing to hide behind "I'm fine." So I told the truth. If it lands for you, I'm glad. If it doesn't, that's okay too. Either way, it's honest.

This Week's Episode

EP7: "The Last Wall" // The x-factor in the mental valley. Faith, surrender, and the thing most men spend their whole lives running from. [Listen now →]

Key Takeaways

Self-reliance has a shelf life. It works in your twenties and thirties when the tank is full and the road is long. But midlife doesn't care how tough you are. The man who built his entire identity on "I can handle this myself" eventually finds himself standing on a foundation that's cracking. Not because he did something wrong. Because the foundation was never designed to hold the weight of an entire life.

The mental valley has a floor, and it's faith. The physical valley's floor is training. The social valley's floor is brotherhood. The mental valley, where purpose and identity live, needs a floor too. Faith: the willingness to believe your life has meaning beyond what you can produce. Not a denomination. Not a set of rules. The decision to stop carrying all of it alone.

Every major faith tradition agrees on the essentials. Strip away the institutions, the politics, the divisions. What the mystics in every tradition are actually saying is the same thing: surrender to something beyond yourself, serve others, be present, practice humility, believe your life has meaning you can't fully see. You don't have to pick a side to pull on that thread.

Your Move This Week

Ask yourself the honest question. Do you believe your life has meaning beyond what you can produce, earn, or control? You don't need an answer by Friday. But sit with the question. Most men never even let themselves ask it.

Name the wall. What are you carrying right now that you refuse to let go of? What's the thing you keep white-knuckling through, telling yourself you should be able to handle it alone? Name it. Write it down if you have to. The wall doesn't come down until you see it.

Try one act of surrender this week. That might be walking into a church for the first time in years. It might be a prayer. It might just be saying out loud, "I can't do this by myself." The form matters less than the honesty. Lower the wall by one brick. See what happens.

One Line to Carry

"I spent most of my adult life believing I didn't need anything bigger than myself. I was wrong. And it almost cost me everything."
